Mercury vapour lamps are often chosen for larger enclosures where a single powerful basking source is required. The Arcadia D3 range delivers a broad, balanced spectrum that closely mimics natural sunlight, helping to support skeletal health and reduce the risk of metabolic bone disease when used correctly.
Unlike linear UVB systems, mercury vapour lamps concentrate heat and UV into a defined basking area. This allows reptiles to thermoregulate naturally by moving in and out of the basking zone, particularly in open-top vivariums or large desert-style enclosures.
Important installation guidance: Mercury vapour lamps must be mounted vertically to allow proper internal convection and should never be used with thermostats, dimmers or external ballasts. They are best suited to large enclosures with adequate height and ventilation.
For optimal UV provision, Arcadia recommends combining mercury vapour basking lamps with a linear UVB system, such as a ProT5, to create a stable UV gradient across the enclosure and give animals greater choice.
