Choosing the Right Harrison’s Bird Food
Harrison’s Bird Foods provide complete, formulated nutrition for companion birds using certified organic ingredients. The range includes different formulas and textures so you can choose according to your bird’s species, life stage, nutritional needs and preferred way of eating.
High Potency or Adult Lifetime?
High Potency formulas are generally used when birds are converting from seed or mixed diets and during periods of increased nutritional demand, including growth, breeding, moulting and recovery. Harrison’s currently recommends that birds converting onto its foods usually remain on an appropriate High Potency formula for around six months before moving to maintenance nutrition.
Adult Lifetime formulas are designed for healthy adult birds with normal maintenance requirements once the initial High Potency period has been completed. Birds that are breeding, moulting, recovering, under one year old or have particular nutritional requirements may need to remain on High Potency for longer.
Choose the Right Texture
Harrison’s foods are available in several particle sizes to suit different species and feeding preferences:
- Superfine – very small particles suited to canaries, finches, budgies and other small birds
- Fine – small pellets for cockatiels, lovebirds, conures, quakers and similar-sized birds
- Coarse – larger pieces for medium and larger parrots
- Mash – minimally processed coarse food that can be fed dry or moistened, useful for birds that prefer a softer texture or during diet conversion
Individual birds can have their own texture preferences, so the expected size for a species is not always the only suitable option.
Converting to Harrison’s
Diet changes should be made carefully while monitoring the bird’s food intake, body weight and general condition. Harrison’s advises introducing the new food while checking acceptance and, where necessary, gradually reducing the previous diet over several weeks.
Fresh Harrison’s food should be offered daily rather than continually topping up older food. Harrison’s recommends that its formulated food provides around 75–80% of the daily diet, with suitable fresh vegetables and fruits making up most of the remainder.
